It will discuss state-of-the-art power converters and their applications in motor drives and utility grid interconnection. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Course Outline:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Power Electronic Converters and their applications for grid connection <\/li><li> Three-phase converter circuits, modeling and control <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Switching function theory of power converters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Mathematical representation of switching functions <\/li><li>Application of switching functions to dc-dc converters, and 1-phase and 3phase ac-dc, dc-ac and ac-ac converters <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Three-phase modeling of converters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) or D-Q modeling of converters <\/li><li>Vector \/ phasor representation of converter input and output variables <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. AC-DC converters: Rectifiers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Line commutated rectifiers \u2013 operation modes, modeling, harmonics<\/li><li>PWM rectifiers- operation, modeling, control, harmonics <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. DC-AC converters: Inverters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Three-phase D-Q modeling and analysis \u2013 inverter vector representation <\/li><li>Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) techniques \u2013 quantitative treatment of PWM <\/li><li>PWM control of Voltage-Source Converter (VSC)<\/li><li> Inverter current control concept; Types of Current Regulators<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6. Matrix (AC-AC) converters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Three-phase D-Q modeling, analysis, and duty cycle control <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7. Resonant converters and Multi-level converters<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li> Resonant DC Link converters and Resonant AC Link converters<\/li><li> Multi-level converter topologies : Neutral-Point Clamped (NPC) 3-level converter, Cascaded multi-level converter, multi-level converter cell concept  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8. Converter application to drives <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vector control concept, and vector controlled VSC based induction motor drive \u2013 example of converter D-Q modeling and PWM current control <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9. Utility interconnection applications of converters  <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Active harmonic filters \u2013 control, system application, issues <\/li><li>Instantaneous Reactive Power (IRP) theory and Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF) control for reactive power and harmonic compensation <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Assignments<\/strong>: 4-6 Homeworks, and one project (report and presentation) Suggested project topics list will be provided, class notes and handouts posted <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grading <\/strong>: Final exam \u2013 open book and typically take home (30%), Project (40%), HWs (30%) REG02.20.1: \u201cReasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>ECE 792E: Advanced Power Electronics: Three-Phase Converter Modeling &amp; Control <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mainly use class notes and handouts \u2013 which will be made available and posted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Suggested Reference Books: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Switching Power Converters \u2013 Peter Wood <\/li><li>Power Electronics : Converters, Applications and Design \u2013 Mohan, Undeland, Robbins <\/li><li>Pulse-width modulation \u2013 Holmes and Lipo<\/li><li>Vector control of Drives \u2013 Novotny and Lipo <\/li><li>Fundamentals of Power Electronics \u2013 Erickson and Maksimovic <\/li><li>Power Electronics \u2013 Kassakian, MS, Verghese <\/li><li>Recent papers in power electronics transactions and conferences <\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This course will focus on modeling, operation and control of power electronics converter systems.
