ASL-Radar Research Team Participates in NTID/AIDB STEM Day

On Feb. 24th, 2022, Dr. Darrin Griffin, Dr. Sevgi Z. Gurbuz, and Dr. Chris Crawford taught a 4-hour workshop on the physics behind radar technologies, basic principles of machine learning, and how radar can be used for sign language recognition. A total of 14 high school students attended the workshop, and engaged in both discussions and hands-on experimentation with 3-sets of 77 GHz radar sensors, which had been modified to work with a simpler user interface so as to allow the students to operate, collect and analyze RF data themselves as part of the workshop.  Students experimented with the radar signatures obtained from a metal corner reflector, walking or running in the room, and using ASL.

The workshop was held at the Talladega School for the Deaf and Blind, and organized by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) and the Alabama Institute of the Deaf and Blind (AIDB).
