Biography
Dr. Ali Cafer Gurbuz is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at North Carolina State University, where he directs the Information Processing and Sensing (IMPRESS) Lab. He is also affiliated with the N.C. Plant Sciences Initiative.
His research integrates signal and image processing with machine learning for radar, remote sensing and wireless communication applications. Current interests include physics-aware and explainable machine learning, learning-based computational imaging, integrated sensing and communication, radar/communication coexistence, sparse signal processing and compressive sensing, passive radar and sensing, and UAV-based remote sensing.
Dr. Gurbuz received his B.S. in electrical engineering from Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Prior to joining NC State in January 2025, he held assistant and associate professor positions at Mississippi State University, and earlier faculty and postdoctoral positions in the United States and Turkey.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and currently serves as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems. His research has been supported by NSF — including an NSF CAREER award — as well as NASA, DoD, NOAA, USDA and other sponsors.
