What we do

The Vázquez Research Group develops the next generation of light-driven bio-integrated optoelectronic and nano-photonic implantable devices, and its supportive technology ecosystem, to address overarching challenges in biomedical research, diagnostics and care. With outcomes that promise to innovate and revolutionize the way we study and treat medical disorders that affect humanity. In the journey, we cultivate and nurture an inclusive environment for academic excellence to our future generation of engineers and scientists.

IMPLANTABLE BIOMEDICAL DEVICES

Personal doctor,  bio-integrated smart pharmacy, health sentinels?

Personalized healthcare comprises a toolset of dedicated bio-integrated and highly sophisticated compliant medical devices equipped with bio-interfaces that interchange information leading to stimulation and sensing. The incorporation of multimodal medical analytic pipelines, supported by machine learning, open countless opportunities in unsupervised personalized therapies and specialized diagnostics. Although the application field is extensive, the focal point in this effort is to develop wireless implantable biomedical devices, and its comprehensive technology ecosystem, as biocompatible platforms to deploy novel bio-interfaces into real-world problems.

NANO-PHOTONICS AND OPTOELECTRONIC BIO-INTERFACES

When nano engineering leads unprecedented biomedical applications.

Optical bio-interfacing represents more than the efficient generation or the sensitive detection of light in the complexity realm of biology. It offers the opportunity to interrogate life beyond the capabilities provided by other techniques such as electrical, chemical, magnetic, etc., alone. The conceptualization and creation of active nano-photonics and optoelectronic devices, and its translation in functional implantable devices in clinical diagnostics and medicine carries grand technological and bio-integration challenges that represent one of the main thrusts of research in the Vazquez Research Group.
